Troubled Images: The Northern Ireland Troubles and Peace Process 1968-2007
Category: KS3 History
This exciting new resource for Key Stage 3 history has been created in conjunction with the Linen Hall Library and its extensive and widely-acclaimed Northern Ireland Political Collection.
In 1968, at the very outset of the Troubles, the Linen Hall Library began gathering political ephemera, building up a unique collection which now comprises over a quarter of a million items - including posters, various kinds of literature, and artefacts. In 2001 the Library created an exhibition from the Collection entitled Troubled Images, along with an accompanying book and CD-ROM. This exhibition toured the globe and the project won the Christopher Ewart-Biggs Memorial Prize in 2003.
Now the Library has teamed up with Colourpoint to produce a text specially designed for the revised curriculum at Key Stage 3, but which will also serve as a general young persons introduction to this vital period in our collective history. All the major events are explored chronologically, along with the main figures involved, in a succinct and even-handed manner. The text is highly illustrated with appropriate images from the Librarys Political Collection, which complement the information provided and act as stimuli. Questions and activities surrounding the text and images are included throughout to aid students comprehension and stimulate enquiry.
Dr Gordon Gillespie, is a Visiting Research Fellow in the Institute of Irish Studies at Queens University, Belfast. He has written various books and articles on Northern Ireland politics, and was involved in the development of the Librarys original Troubled Images project.
