Shap Steam Twilight: English Railway Photographers Category: Transport The West Coast main line from Crewe to Carlisle includes the famous Shap incline between Lancaster and Penrith which, at 24 miles with gradients up to 1:75, challenged steam trains for generations and often required banking assistance. Tom Heavyside's book records the last months of steam haulage over Shap in the summer and autumn of 1967.
