Local People, Global Faiths Book 2: Muslims, Buddhists and Baha'is in Northern Ireland
Category: KS3 RE
Given that one of the issues in the ongoing review of the core syllabus for RE in Northern Ireland is the study of world religions, we have produced these innovative resources.
They are designed especially for Key Stage 3 RE students, but will also be of interest to other young people both inside and outside the classroom.
This pair of textbooks is designed to introduce young people to some of the major world religions and their presence in Northern Ireland.
Students will learn about: > Islam, Buddhism and Baha'i as world religions > Local Muslim, Buddhist and Baha'i communities > How those communities worship > Their important festivals > Their key beliefs > Their teachings on right and wrong
The books are accompanied by a set of Web Quests, one for each religion, accessible by clicking here.
The books are written by Stranmillis University College lecturers James Nelson and Norman Richardson, in conjunction with the Northern Ireland Inter-Faith Forum and with contributions from members of our local faith communities.
The authors have worked extremely closely with these communities to ensure accurate representation and a high level of participation.
It is the authors belief that a local perspective should be central to education about world faiths. Northern Ireland has become a place where there is an increasingly rich mix of different ethnic groups and religious traditions, and young people must understand and appreciate that these faiths are practised within their own community by their neighbours and peers.
These books are the first of their nature to be designed and written from a specifically local context.
James Nelson has been a Head of RE and is now a lecturer in Religious Studies at Stranmillis University College, Belfast. He has written several RE textbooks for schools.
Norman Richardson teaches Religious Studies at Stranmillis University College, Belfast. He has a long-standing involvement in inter-church and inter-faith issues and has written and lectured regularly in the field of religious and cultural diversity.
