The Fishbourne Car Ferry 1st Ed Wight Connection

Category: Shipping

15 March 1926 saw the opening of a new six mile car ferry service between Portsmouth and the tiny village of Fishbourne on the Isle of Wight. This book looks at the history of the Fishbourne car ferry and speculates on what may lie ahead. It is intended to be of general interest as well as providing something for shipping enthusiasts and local historians. Also included is some interesting technical data on the ships along with recollections of men who worked them.

The Author

John Faulkner is a resident of the Isle of Wight. Watching from the kitchen window of his childhood home at Wootton he would wait for the graceful ocean liners to pass along the Solent but, as he often missed them, more time was spent watching the ferries arriving at and departing from nearby Fishbourne. As time progressed and the ferries were replaced John's interests in the history of the service grew and his research has uncovered much more of interest about the Fishbourne ferry than he had ever realised.
