The Kid Glove Pilot A personal account of flying Sunderlands in WW2

Category: Military

Alan Deller's book is an autobiographical account of his service with the RAF during World War Two. Immediately on the outbreak of war Alan enlisted but, although keen to join the RAF, he initially was trained as a saboteur for service in Romania and subsequently in the Mediterranean.  He even held a commission in the Royal Navy for a time.

However, he persisted with his desire to join the RAF and was particularly keen to pilot flying boats. This book is a detailed and fascinating account of all this and of his training and service in the RAF.

This book will be of particular interest to Short Sunderland enthusiasts and those interested in RAF operations in Burma - Deller was involved with the evacuation of the Chindits in 1944.

The Author

Squadron-Leader Alan Deller habitually wore kid gloves while flying and this led to his nickname 'The Kid Glove Pilot'. Prior to the war he worked for Shell oil and subsequently he returned to work with Shell. After his retirement from Shell, he spent ten years as a Consultant with Sir Robert McAlpine. He now lives in retirement in London.
