The Class '50s (Nostalgia Road)

Category: Transport

The English Electric Class 50 locomotives introduced to the West Coast Main Line of British Railways in 1967 were, without a doubt, a class of engines with a huge appeal. This has been testified to by their continuing popularity and the large number that have been served for preservation.

This volume, the first in the Heritage Traction in Colour series, charts their careers and liveries during their long service lives with British Rail. It goes a little deeper too, giving some history behind the naming of the individual engines. The book brings to life once again, the interest the Class 50s aroused in the late 1980s and and early 1990s.

The pictures have been individually selected by Kevin Derrick of the Strathwood Picture Library, and represent some interesting and unusual variations of a class that saw a full and interesting service life. Starting their careers on the West Coast Main Line between Crewe and Glasgow, they were more than adequate replacements for the steam engines that were displaced from the route in 1968. When the line was electrified, they headed south and west to work on the GWR main line, and later on Network South East routes. So join with us on a journey of pure Nostalgia, as the Class 50s ride again!
