Steam ended on the Southern Region in 1967, some 13 months ahead of steam on BR as a whole. This book reflects the 19 years in question, with colour pictures taken anywhere between Kent and Cornwall.

The great express locomotives, especially the Bullied Pacifics, feature prominently, and conjour up days when the Bournemouth Belle, Atlantic Coast Express and the Golden Arrow were among Britain's crack express trains.

The Authors

The name of Professor Alan Earnshaw will need little introduction to readers of railway books. The author of over 20 railway books and a lecturer in railway history, he has long believed in the need for a range of reasonably-priced books to re-tell the story of British Railways. In this book, with Kevin Derrick as picture editor, he strives to do just that.
