Home Ground (Foundation): A Geography of Northern Ireland
Category: KS3 Special Needs
With the involvement of an experienced Special Needs teacher, this Foundation Level version of a classic text brings this beautiful book to a much wider ability range.
See the online resource centre for this book.
Derek Polley and Betty Calvert have meticulously re-read every sentence of the original book and have adapted the text sensitively to enhance its accessibility. Where necessary, layout has also been adjusted to improve clarity for less able readers. Text size has been enlarged, more difficult questions adapted and, where necessary, page layout sensitively redesigned to facilitate understanding. Because of this, pagination does not always correspond to that of the original book. Questions and activities of a suitable level are included throughout.
Chapters, as in Home Ground, are:
Mapwork Ecosystems Physical Geography Weather Settlement Population Economic Activity
All with relevant and entertaining Northern Ireland based sources and case studies.
Derek Polley is Head of Geography in Nendrum College, Comber. He graduated with a BA from Queen's University Belfast in 1969 and added a Diploma in Education 1970. He taught for two years in Sierra Leone. He has also taught in Ballynahinch High, Movilla High and Knockbreda High before being appointed to Comber High School (now Nendrum College) in 1991. This has given him wide experience of teaching Geography to the Junior School and also at CSE, 'O' level, GCSE and 'A' level. He is the author of Wider Ground (Colourpoint, 2005), Home Ground, A Geography of Northern Ireland (Colourpoint, 1999) and Higher Ground, A Geography of Northern Ireland for GCSE (Colourpoint, 2001).
Betty Calvert was Special Needs Co-ordinator in Knockbreda High School from 1978 until her early retirement in 1996. She is a member of the Special Needs Tribunal for Northern Ireland.
