Passenger Ships of the 20th Century: An Illustrated Encyclopedia

Category: Shipping

This major reference book has been compiled by Australian ship researcher David Latimer, after years of detailed work. It aims to help ship enthusiasts all over the world to answer questions like "Does anyone know where . . . is now?"

See the bottom of this page for sample pages and entries. Please give them time to load!

This encyclopedia gives the details of approximately 3600 vessels built between 1900 and 2000, including all passenger ships afloat at the end of 2000. The work includes all ships over 3000 grt and with 50 or more berths. It does not include ferries without berthed accommodation. Over 450 current ships are illustrated, including the latest cruise liners. The alphabetical listing and extensive cross-referencing enables the enthusiast to look up a ship under any of the various names it carried.

With its comprehensive coverage, painstakingly checked and rechecked over several years, Passenger Ships of the 20th Century deserves to become the definitive international reference work in this field.

About the Author

David Latimer was born and brought up in Pukekohe, near Auckland, New Zealand. His enthusiasm for ships stems from his boyhood visits to Auckland Harbour in the late 1930s. On leaving school he moved to Sydney, Australia, to work for Qantas Airlines. Later he became an Australian Immigration officer based in Britain, making regular visits to Tilbury and Southampton docks. He is now living near Sydney, Australia, and has used his retirement to compile this encyclopedia.
