The Challenge of Jesus

Category: GCSE RE

This book is a refreshing new look at a man with a unique world view. Writing for the 14 to 16 age group, the authors examine the life and times of Jesus in detail, bringing out the excitement, drama and tragedy of events which have had such a resonance down through the centuries and still affect our society today.

The authors begin by setting the scene and showing how political, historical, geographical, social and religious factors all combined to shape the volatile country into which Jesus was born.

The book examines the major events of Jesus’ life and death, his teaching and actions and their relevance to our own experience today. The nature of the issues which faced the people of Palestine so long ago - and which Jesus fearlessly confronted - are suprisingly contemporary, including issues such as the role of religious leaders, women, the poor, outsiders and immigrants. Throughout this book close reference is made to Matthew and Luke.

The book covers the core topics for the course laid down for all pupils studying RE at this level in Northern Ireland. For pupils entering for the RE examination, The Challenge of Jesus section of the Northern Ireland GCSE Religous Education syllabus is covered.

Useful for youth groups looking for stimulating source material for discussion.
