Christian Morality
Category: GCSE RE
This lively and thought-provoking book is aimed at the 14 to 16 age group. There are five main sections: Friendship, sexuality and responsibilty; Marriage; Parenting; Caring and respect for life; Social responsibilities. Each of these subject areas is expanded into an exploration of issues such as boy-girl relations, mixed marriages and marital breakdown, single parenting, care of the elderly, abortion and euthanasia, drugs, employment and leisure.
An important feature of this book is that, while the issues are fearlessly explored, the authors detail both the Christian attitude to them through reference to the Bible and church teaching as laid out in church statements and publications. The attitudes of the Catholic, Church of Ireland, Presbyterian and Methodist churches are examined. Questions, activities and discussion topics are included.
This text covers the core topics for the course laid down for all pupils studying RE at this level in Northern Ireland. For pupils entering for the RE examination, the Christian Morality section of the Northern Ireland GCSE Religous Education syllabus is covered.
Useful for youth groups looking for stimulating source material for discussion.
In its examination of cross community church attitudes, it will contribute to Education for Mutual Understanding.
For any young person caught in the modern environment.
James Nelson has been a Head of RE and is now a lecturer at Stranmillis University College, Belfast.
Juliana Gilbride (nee McNeice) is Head of RE in Rainey Endowed School, Magherafelt.
