The Author

Professor A C Hepburn studied at the Universities of Cambridge and Kent, and is now Professor of Modern Irish History at the University of Sunderland. Previously he lived in Northern Ireland for nearly twenty years, holding posts at the University of Ulster and Queen’s University, Belfast. He is author of Nationalism and Socialism in Twentieth-century Ireland (1977) with E Rumpf, The Conflict of Nationality in Modern Ireland (1980) and A Past Apart: Studies in the History of Catholic Belfast, 1850-1950 (1996). He is currently working on a comparative study of divided cities in modern history.
