This is an attractive book aimed at 13 to 15 year olds studying history. Topics covered include a look at Irish rural life before 1845, the land question, the development of unionism and nationalism during the period, the Gaelic Revival and the sequence of events leading up to partition.

Four, more detailed, case studies are included:

> the growth of Belfast and its linen and shipbuilding industries;

> the Easter Rising.

Optional questions are added to extend the topic. The generous number of photographs and contemporary cartoons add greatly to the appeal of this book, making it an easy yet informative read.

The Authors

Dr Russell Rees is a native of Co Londonderry, and took his degree and doctorate at the University of Ulster, Coleraine. He is author of Ireland and British Politics 1870-1921 (Colourpoint 1993) and co-author of Britain, Ireland and Europe 1570-1745 (Colourpoint 1994). He is also author of Ireland 1905- 25 Volume One: Text and Historiography, (Colourpoint 1998) He is Head of History and Politics at Omagh Academy, Co Tyrone.

Audrey Hodge MA is a senior teacher at Omagh Academy. She has been teaching history at all levels for over twenty years and has written Colourpoint's [{The Race}]The Race to Rule.
