Harper of the Only God: Selected poems by Alice Milligan Category: Irish Interest The Harper of the Only God is the first collection of Alice Milligans poetry to be published since the volume produced after her death in 1953. Alice Milligan was one of the lesser known figures in Irish Nationalism in the period 1890-1916. Born in Omagh, Co Tyrone and daughter of the well-known antiquarian and writer Seaton Milligan, she was a prominent Gaelic Leaguer during the Leagues heyday in the early 1900s. Alice Milligan was one of that small, but significant, group of Protestant Nationalists, which included Parnell, Hyde and Roger Casement, and was one of the most vivacious of the politically aware Irish women of a hundred years ago. This personal selection from her works demonstrates her understanding of family and friendship, of solitude and love, as well as the well worn images of power and patriotism. The Author Sheila Turner Johnston is one of the partners in Colourpoint. In the early part of her career she was a librarian and is now a full time writer and publisher. She became interested in Alice Milligan when she lived in Omagh, where Alice Milligan was born, and ultimately spent her last years. Extract from the Poem Till Ferdia Came The glory of the Northern Gael, When weary of the watch he'd kept And wounded sore, Cuchulain slept; The youth of Erin glad, untired, With hearts untamed, with hopes inspired, Rose up against the invading foe. As it was then it may be so In these sad days of blood and tears. Have faith - trust God for happier years, For strength upheld, for peace restored 'Twixt those who battle at the ford. - Alice Milligan |
